Short answers to the questions that come up when a .dcm lands in the lab and nothing
will open it. Each page answers one question and then gets out of the way.
- Your .dcm is not a DICOM file Two different files share the extension. Tell them apart in ten seconds, and understand why DICOM viewers and DICOM converters both fail on a 3Shape scan.
- Open a .dcm without a 3Shape seat Every option compared: the free viewer that will not export, the installs, the uploaders, and the paid service. Plus how to check whether a web tool sends your file anywhere.
- Encrypted scans, and the ones that never open Nearly every modern TRIOS scan is encrypted, and many still open offline. Implant library locked scans do not. Here is how to tell which one you are holding.
- Get a .dcm into exocad Convert to STL, keep the millimetres, load it as a scan. Also covers Meshmixer, Blender and printer software, and the rescaling mistake that throws the model off.
Or just open the file
If you already know what you have, drop it straight into the converter. Nothing installs and nothing is uploaded.
